Activities:

1. Watch the following video just for pleasure without paying attention to details. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2JAEGhZxlM&feature=related,
2. Play it again but now close your eyes.
3. Write the words, expressions, feelings, memories that came to your mind while you were listening to it.
4. Imagine what happened to the woman. Make up a story about her. Write no more than 200 words.

After going out the Karaoke, she missed him ever more. Memories crept suddenly in her mind. Having imagined him there, sitting; listening to what she had to tell him was too much. As a matter of fact, it was too much for her friends, who were terribly worried about her, but too little for her that needed him more and more very second.
On arriving home, she took some sleeping pills, various in fact, and went to bed straight away but she couldn’t sleep soundly. She dreamed. She dreamed about him. She dreamed, or imagined, or felt him, so close to her, so real… the melody he sung to her so sweet…

Oh - thinkin' about all our younger years
There was only you and me
We were young and wild and free

Now nothin' can take you away from me
We bin down that road before
But that's over now
You keep me comin' back for more

Baby you're all that I want
When you're lyin' here in my arms
I'm findin' it hard to believe
We're in heaven
And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn't too hard to see
We're in heaven

Oh - once in your life you find someone
Who will turn your world around
Bring you up when you're feelin' down

Ya - nothin' could change what you mean to me
Oh there's lots that I could say
But just hold me now
Cause our love will light the way

N' baby you're all that I want
When you're lyin' here in my arms
I'm findin' it hard to believe
We're in heaven
And love is all that I need
And I found it there in your heart
It isn't too hard to see
We're in heaven

I've bee-n waitin' for so long
For something to arrive
For love to come along

Now our dreams are comin' true
Through the good times and the bad
Ya - I'll be standin' there by you

After having finished singing, she ran out of the room and, looking eagerly for a place where to be alone, she let her body lean back on a wall. She couldn’t bear, even think about, what she was feeling in that moment. It was something noone would have ever explained with words. She was whising on that night, she’d give her all to have just one more night with him. “I can’t go on living in the memory of our song...”, she dared to say in a shaky voice. Suddenly, everything turned dark, the world stopped....nothing moved. Little by little, she started perceiving a familiar voice coming from nowhere. It was calling her... “My dear! I’m sure you can overcome this awful situation... There are lot of things you must do before coming... I promise you, it would be eternal bliss when you return to my arms... I will be right here waiting for you... Remember me, my words, my lips, my body, my all... all we used to be... I’ll always be yours... you don’t need to worry... The future is ours... Don’t be afraid, I’ll always stand by your side. You should know I wouldn’t let you fall... The strength is inside you.... Please don’t forget about yourself... you, little star that shines in the sky, that guided me till my end... listen to my words, honey... don’t give up, don’t ever surrender... Resist... Whatever happens, you must keep going. I assure you that it’s worth waiting for a sigh... In the meantime, enjoy life, have fun, don’t pity me... I’m telling you all this because I know deep down that you will go on further, far way... even through the distance and spaces between us... Before I leave, recall these, my last words: I’m with you, feel me that I’m in the smell of your skin, look for me that I’m in your heart, remember me that I’m in your memory, listen to me that I’m by your side... Now, that I’ve tried to talk to you and made you understand, all you have to do is open your eyes and let me go...” And then, he whispered a soft “I love you” and left me alone again.

Personal Opinion about the Video:

Well, I should say that at the very beginning, this video seemed to be kind of shocking but after getting deeper to the topic I have change my mind. There is ample evidence that men are becoming increasingly aware of the values of cosmetic surgery. The reason for this to happen may be that, a youthful appearance and looking fit are really important in business and society nowadays. Besides, very often, body distortions can detract from a positive feeling about ourselves. This can be the result of an uderlying assumption: “If you look better, you feel better.” Thus, it is true to say that all of us, in different degrees want to be considered attractive. In my opinion, it is not always that way. However, I believe that cosmetic techniques and surgery can possibily help to enhance self-image.

Comparison with the article:

It is evident that to have cosmetic surgery is becoming more common for men. Basically, since the beginning of the 21st century, cosmetic techniques have gained popularity, and more importantly, acceptance. The fact is that for the majority of people, plastic surgeon is like a true sculptor of the human body that helps to attain the stereotyped perfect or desirable figure. Besides, as the video shows, surgical correction can sometimes restore self-confidence which is needed in to suceed in the world of business nowadays. Moreover, as the article I have chosen mentions, in today's competitive society, people recognize the importance of self-improvement whether it is for social or professional reasons. Thus, men have dicovered the benefits of cosmetic surgery not only personally, but also professionally. Furtermore, men chose to have an operation because, sometimes, they want to keep pace with their younger-looking wives and it is also a way to fit their own needs. Hence, in a sense, for most people, cosmetic surgery offers a second chance. What’s more, looking fit and attractive give people more opportunities to succed in life. Nevertheless, there are times in which this assumption of beauty associated with ability or intelligence can lead to discrimination.

article:
MEN WANT TO LOOK GOOD TOO

More and more men today are having cosmetic surgery to help them look younger and attractive. Like their female counterparts, they have discovered the benefits of cosmetic surgery not only personally, but also professionally.

Men are recognizing that wrinkles, frown lines, crow’s feet, droopy eyelids, baldness and double chins can make them look old, tired, and appear less competitive on the job.

Top Cosmetic Procedures

Like women, they want trimmer waists and fewer wrinkles. And they want more hair. Men are also rejuvenating their faces with face, neck and eye lifts, forehead and brow lifts; having lasers and peels to remove the wrinkles and make their skin look younger; resculpting their noses and undergoing liposuction and tummy tucks. These improvements haven’t stopped at the surgeon’s office. Men are also going to hair salons instead of barber shops, having facials and other skin toning treatments, and shopping at cosmetic counters.

A New Trend?

Yes, cosmetic surgery is up and men are a big part of the increase. Patients say they don’t want to keep putting off their dreams and goals. Baby Boomers have reached the unfashionable age of 50. In a society that values youth, 50-year-old executives are competing with younger, fitter and more competitive 30-year-olds, who are often willing to work harder, and for less money. One 40-year-old sales executive felt that his baggy eyelids and tired looking appearance affected his peers’ perception of his ability to perform his job. “Every morning I would go to work and someone would ask if I was tired and asked did I get enough sleep. In the business world the feeling is if you look tired or don’t take care of yourself, people think you can’t keep up.”

But, it’s not just busy business executives in fear of losing their jobs who are filling the plastic surgeon’s waiting room. On the home front, men are also finding they want to keep pace with younger-looking wives. Following his wife’s facelift, a retired executive put it like this, “Now that I have a young-looking wife, I decided to take a look at myself.”

Gise's Activity
by: Melina Lasorella

Well, as far as the video is concerned, I think it is absolute madness to do something like that. I don’t mean that because he’s a man, the genre is indifferent, but because of the action. I’m completely against plastic surgery for cosmetic purposes only. Going through this kind of intervention means running the same risks that are run in any other kind of surgery and, to do it only because you want to look better? I think that if one is not happy with the way one looks, the most important and, of course, difficult thing to do is to accept our own body and develop self- confidence and esteem in spite of that. However, nowadays everything is telling us to look for shortcuts, and this guy just went with the flow.

The article I found is titled “Middle-aged men at risk of 'addiction' to plastic surgery”. It is about a new tendency taking place mainly in the United States in which men decide to go through this kind of operations because of different reasons: to look younger, to feel better or to have success in their social lives and careers. The problem of this trend, explains a psychologist, is that many men become obsessed with the idea and suffer from different mental health problems. Here’s the link if you’re interested in reading it: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-wellbeing/health-news/middleaged-men-at-risk-of-addiction-to-plastic-surgery-656680.html

This article shows the unwanted effects of plastic surgery. The man who speaks in the video has the characteristics mentioned in this article: he is middle aged and he is willing to go under an operation he doesn’t need to have, at least for any therapeutic purpose. He only wants to go through the intervention so as to look and feel better but, as the doctor interviewed explains, cosmetic surgery alone cannot improve the emotional or professional lives of individuals. It might be a fashion to follow, Hollywood stars, as usual, “set the example”, or an easy way to try to feel better but testimonies as well as statistics reflect other things. There are risks to become addicted to cosmetic surgery and go on adding non organic substances to your body or taking out parts of it in an unnatural manner.
