It's UP to you!!
It's easy to understand the use of the word "up" in "sit up" or "stand up" or "get up", but why do we wake up? Why, in a discussion, is a topic brought up? Why do we speak up? Why are we up for election? And why is it up to the secretary to write up the minutes?
Frequently the word is not needed: thus we brighten up, freshen up, light up (though not so many of us these days), polish up the silver, fix up the car and lock up the house. Some people stir up trouble. We queue up for tickets, work up an appetite, think up an excuse, get held up in traffic and tied up at the office. To be dressed up is different from just being dressed. But we open up a drain if it is blocked up. We open up a shop in the morning and close it up at night, for closing down means something quite different. We appear to be thoroughly mixed up about the uses of "up".
If you want to be up on the proper use of up, look it up in the dictionary. In one dictionary it takes up half a page, the definitions adding up to around 40. If you feel up to it you might try making up a list of all the ways up is used. It will take up a lot of time and if your don't give up you might have to hurry up and make up after the bust up with your spouse for using up so much effort when you could be better employed washing up. So cheer up or you could wind up up the pole.

Are we supposed to study them all????
Of course Paola!!!! I will TEST MY STUDENTS on them all (and no kidding!)
Do you care to join us for the test?
Liliana
I'll try to put up with them :P
Maria, I'm sure you will not only "put UP" with phrasal verbs but will also "come up" with a funny piece!
Get it??
I sometimes have trouble getting my meaning across English. So, get ready to read this!! Teachers always say the best way to get ahead is through hard work but how can I get along with so much schoolwork? For me, studying phrasal verbs is such a difficult topic that it gets me off to sleep. Nevertheless, I’d better find a way to get around phrasal verbs or else, I should get my classmates in to explain me them.
Last year, my grammar wasn’t very good but I got by with phrasal verbs. This year, the situation is different. When I think of them, I just want to get away from it all. To tell you the truth, doing exercises applying this kind of verbs gets me down. I rather prefer spending my time doing interesting things such as going out with my friends or planning to get back home where I can do what I want. On days like these, when you are fed up, wouldn’t you like saying “I’m sorry but I haven’t got round to making my homework on phrasal verbs yet”?
To be honest, I consider that if I want to get on, I have to get down to studying and practising phrasal verbs. Besides, I don’t believe that escaping from a problem is the best solution. However, do you think the problem can be got over without too much difficulty? Bearing this in mind, I’m sure you will understand why I want to get this highly complex task over with as quickly as possible!!! Je,je!!
Come on! Let it out I know you are waiting for the moment to let out a scream of terror…who wouldn’t? Tons of phrasal verbs for language III! Don’t let on to the teacher that I’m not very fond of the way this class’s turned out, ok? I mean, I’ve never expected it to be easy but don’t you think she’s overreacting? L, we are good girls…why don’t you let us off with no punishment? Turn off the flow of phrasal verbs, please! At least for a while…Don’t think I’m turning on you…It’s just that I long for you to turn up some ay telling us “Girls! D’you know what? Phrasal verbs are gone…” However, I won’t turn down L’s invitation to post “this thing.” Besides, you and I mustn’t let up now…we’re almost teachers, aren’t we?
George and Georgia are famous singers. They work for the same company. George is a handsome muscular man and Georgia is short and has curly hair. Both are lovely people. However, at the very beginning, they do´nt GET ON WITH. Their interests are pretty different. Once, George invites Georgia to GO OUT. They go to a well known restaurant. There, people LOOK AT them and say what a couple! While having dinner, they CARRY ON talking. They start to HIT IT OFF. Another time they meet, George begins COMING ON TO Georgia. She definitely gives him the COME-ON, with her gorgeous big green eyes. After two years, the couple SETTLES DOWN and they get married. A marvellous wedding with 400 guests is celebrated. Nevertheless, they SPLIT UP because of some rumours of infidelity...
Nati and Anto: come on!!! I'm just being nice to you because I'm helping you to learn!!! je je
Don't worry... this too shall pass!!
kindly,
your teacher
Virgi, good piece.
You have not complained about having to use phrasal verbs... good for you!!!
Phrasals & luck
Some people just have bad luck. They’re usually ripped off when buying something at a shop because someone slipped up and pressed the wrong button in the calculator. In an important meeting, they immediately drop off. When they are taking off their bosses they are usually caught and must step down. If someone tells them a secret, they unwillingly let it on impeding themselves to be grown on. Here, is where problems start for them because people want to pay them back for having had them on.
Unlucky people always come up or crop up with something that impedes them from doing what they had planned. For example, if they invite people to drop in they end up putting their visitors up for several weeks, just when they were planning to do up their bedrooms.
Unfortunately, these people are used to it. When children, their mothers used to tell them off because they wouldn’t own up having broken the cutlery. However hard they try to give over and sort out to this problem, they go on screwing up. Surely they would love to pack in these events, but whenever they have a chance to grasp something similar to luck, they miss out once and again. Even if they fall for someone who seems to be their other significant, they fall for it and end up got down for this disillusion. Unlucky people push on trying to improve their situation but it never picks up. They just go from bad to worse.
Are you among these people¿? I hope not! you are lucky that you know aaaall these phrasals!
sorry for the delay..but I really don't like what I wrote and I was trying to change it..but failed :S

Throughout all my years of experience, I have BORNE OUT that love is not as magic as I imagined it when I was a child.
If you WORK OUT the number of occasions in which you FELL OUT WITH your boyfriend or girlfriend, you will realise that all the marvellous moments TURNED OUT to TAKE OUT ON the other one leading to arguments, bad mood and reproaches.
If you think you SORTED OUT this problem, you'll be disappointed with the passing of time. HAVING IT OUT WITH your couple, pretending to MAKE your partner OUT, THROWING OUT your relationship or even STICKING OUT FOR only what you want without caring about the other, doesn't seem to be reasonable paths to follow.
You shouldn't HOLD OUT much hope if you consider that the only guilty one is the other. If you are GOING OUT WITH somebody, both of you have the same responsibility when something arises. Remember that human relationships, even with friends, are not easy at all but we should try not to feel PUT OUT.
Get away from it all!!
"It´s time you get down to work" my mother told me. However she didn´t get her idea across because I continued watching T.V as if nobody had talked to me. I didn´t want to assume responsibilities,I felt as a child and I got round restrictions, authorities and rutines.
However, one morning I was obliged to get up early. It seemed to be a horrible nightmare but it was real, I couldn´t get out of looking for a job. Unfortunately, I became a bank employee and since that moment I have been the saddest woman in the world. Every morning I have to get away home at 7.00 a.m, spend the day working as a "slave" and I get off work at 7.00 p.m. Furthermore, the worst thing is I have to go to work by bicycle. Imagine how I feel at the end of the day!I am a zombie, moving slowing and doing things without thinking.
Sincerely, I haven´t got on with my job because I hate it and I don´t enjoy it.I want only one thing: to get away from it all and to relax in a far-off place.
I am a silly!!!when I finished my writing I realised that Nati had written his writing using GET..but, well there are some of them which are repeated. It´s another way to learn,It´s another story.Sorry!!
“Just wind down, my darling” Charles told to her girlfriend, “we’ve been on holidays for almost a week and you are still thinking about that awfully boring project from your job.” She knew he was right so she took a deep breath and lay down on the warm sand of that beach in the Adriatic coast. During the last months, she had been weighted down by so many problems that she deserved those relaxing days. They had been cutting down expenses for years to afford those vacations. Charles had promised her those would be the best days of her life and he didn’t let her down: since their arrival, everything had been perfect. Actually, everything had come down to enjoy the sun and the sea.
The following morning she awoke and looked at her boyfriend: he was still sleeping. She jotted down a brief note to him and went downstairs to have breakfast. The coffee was extremely hot so, while she let it cool down, she thought that in three days she would be again at the office, entering that run down old building: her boss putting her down in front of everybody and talking down to her as if she were an idiot.
She was now feeling miserable, she broke down and wept. All those thoughts had got her down and the coffee had gone cold. She looked at the window: it was pouring down.
Meli L...
I was absolutely aware of what was going on, I was on to him. He wouldn’t ever have me on again, that I could promise. I would bring on his infidelity. But, before telling you how I did it, let me give you a brief account of the situation. It all began when, about a month and a half ago, I found him hitting on Anne…yes, my beloved mother. Anne is a sexy mom in her forties who took on a new lease of life since divorce. To put it simply, she’s become a party animal. How could she turn him on? I consider myself much attractive than her. Ok, let’s say being with an older woman was one of his fantasies…but still, how could he turn her on? He’s my boyfriend for God’s sake! The guy I’ve dreamed of marrying when I get on my twenties!
When I first introduced Josh to her she couldn’t stand him. Still, two weeks ago she commented at the table:
“Josh is growing on me, he seems to be a good boy”. I swear I almost spilled the entire juice jar on her.
“This month you must be getting on six secret dates with him already,” was my first thought.
Then she inquired, “How is he getting on his new job?,” like if she actually cared!
“Fine,” I replied, “his work is beginning to catch on in the company, he’s a computer buff.”
“And… how is the relationship going?” I just couldn’t believe my ears.
“We’re just fine mum; in case something’s wrong I’ll let you know, ok?”
“Of course, you know you can count on me”. That was it. Whether I stubbed her with the butter knife or left the table. Fortunately for her the knife was beyond my reach.
I had been deceived and felt absolutely miserable. I had to fall on Clara (my sister), a conceited featherhead I have to share my days with. I look on her as the most disgusting being on earth. Although under the present circumstances, I considered her to be the third most disgusting being on earth. Still, I may say, she was the only one that could help me out. I let her on the situation and begged her not to let anybody else in on what I was going through. I turned on the TV so as not be heard by a soul. After I had told her the secret she hated mum just as much as I did. We didn’t really know how to manage the whole thing. We remained in silence and watched the soup opera on the screen. After a few minutes we realised a similar situation was taking place in the story and…we hit on the solution to our problem just by chance. That Friday night mum would go out with her girlfriend. Clara and I followed her and carried the video camera with us. It turned out her so-called “girlfriend” was not much of a girl after all. It was actually him she had gone to meet. We taped the whole reunion. The next day I posted it on Youtube and sent the link to Josh’s parents and every relative we have in the world. Guess what, mum is still sleeping and I’ve already received twenty four lost calls in my cellphone, a bunch of flowers, three kilos of chocolate…Josh, dear, your corny apologies won’t work with me babe. Drop dead!!!
Susan was a young girl who went in for the disco every weekend. As each Saturday night, she went to Carol’s house where all her friends met to decide at which pub they prefer going to. As it was a cold rainy night and neither of them had a car, they bargained for Carol’s idea: to go for the nearest pub. While Susan and his friends were dancing, she suddenly saw a handsome boy working as the barman and she immediately fell for him. Without thinking what she was doing, she moved towards that guy. “I have never seen you before”, she said kindly. The boy smiled at her lovingly and explained to her that he stood in for John, who was ill. She could not believe her eyes what a funny and friendly guy he was and went an talking to him for a long time. Unluckily, she realised it was too late, “Sorry, but I should be going home- it must getting on for five o’clock, she told him sadly. The boy understood Susan and asked for her telephone number. She gave it to him happily with the hope he would call her one day. Although that night was very cold and rainy, she would never forget it,for it made for the best one, as she had met that guy, the love of her life.
i have chosen the preposition For, sorry but i did not know how to highlight the phrasal verbs....i did not dealize i could use capital letter.
There had been a long time since I had the idea to GET AWAY from home. The reason was that I GOT AROUND from Esperanza to Rafaela every day in order to attend school. This situation was extremely tiring; above all, I never GOT ROUND TO doing my homework. For this reason, most of the times when I GOT INTO the classroom, my homework was half-finished. In addition, my mates used to GET TOGETHER to study and it GOT me DOWN not to be able to study with them too. However, as I had been GETTING DOWN TO find a flat in Rafaela, I was GOT OVER when I finally found one. Now that I have already moved, I am glad to GET the stressful situation of GETTING BEHIND with my homework OVER WITH. What is more, I GET ALONG very well with my flatmate as she is a really nice person.

Racing used to let me down when playing in almost every football match . But fortunatly, today we get ahead and win a very decisive match!! Everybody advises me to like another football team but they don´t know that being fan of it, is a real passion! They will never bring me around! I go off when someone tell me that but then I really don´t want to go into that. I will always go on liking and defending Racing against those who bawl it out. So, if you are trying to say something against Racing, think twice before making any comment!
I look up to my grandfather because when looking back on my childhood he was always making me feel so happy! He looked after me when my parents were working. But when he decided to move to his country I felt really sad! When we travelled to his town we always looked him up and enjoyed his barbecue! I´m looking forward to seeing him soon! There is one thing that I remember about his personality: He was so conceited that he looked down on everybody else.
yes,Juli!!!It´s true, being fan of RACING is a real passion!!!
